Benefits of Ceramic Precision Ball Bearings
Their are several benefits for using ceramic bearings making them the ideal choice for those individuals engaged in wheelchair sports.
The ceramic balls inside the bearings generate less friction than steel bearings, making the wheel or caster fork easier to rotate
Less friction means less heat which will make the bearing last longer
Less friction and less heat equal more performance
1/2 x 1 1/8 in. R8RS Ceramic Precision Wheelchair or Scooter Bearing Fitment Notes
Many wheelchairs from Quickie (Sunrise), TiLite, Colours and Top End (Invacare) use this bearing on the rear wheels of their manual wheelchairs. It is also used as the caster fork stem bearing on many sport wheelchairs (both upper and lower). Also fits many wheelchair rims from Spinergy and X-Core. Your existing bearing should have one of these alpha numeric numbers stamped on the shield of the bearing: R8RS, R8, R8Z or R8ZZ. It is highly advisable to measure the inside diameter of your existing bearing if the reference number is R8 or R8RS and make sure it is 1/2" as R8 or R8RS bearings are also available with 7/16" or 12 mm inner diameters.
General Wheelchair and Scooter Bearing Notes
Many bearings found on wheelchairs and scooters have a alpha numeric reference or just a numeric reference number stamped on the side of the bearing which refers to the type and size of the bearing. In most cases, that is all you need to purchase the correct bearing. For alpha numeric reference numbers ending in Z, ZZ, RS, or 2RS, they are all interchangeable (Z and ZZ refer to a metal outer side shield and RS and 2RS refer to a rubber outer side shield protecting the balls inside the bearing). If your bearing has no reference on it, you will have to measure. If the bearing reference appears worn off, you may be able to see it stamped on the other side.
